During cold weather, especially in winter, the water in your pipes and water meter may freeze due to being exposed to the cold for a long period of time (e.g. overnight). As the water in the pipes freezes, it expand leading to an increase in pressure. This can cause a blockage of water to your house and even lead to unwanted damage to the equipment.
- Before the cold weather arrives, cover the water meter with a box/container/bucket to trap the air around it. This decreases the amount of cold air coming into contact with the exposed equipment.
- Install insulation on exposed pipes above ground to prevent pipe freezing. This is available in hardware stores.
If possible, allow the pipes and water meter to thaw naturally throughout the day as the temperature increases.
If access to water is urgent, pour lukewarm water onto the pipes and water meter. Do not Alternatively, you can place a warm heating pad around the water meter and pipes.
